International Airfield Pavement Design & Evaluation Expert

He has fifty years’ experience in the design, construction and maintenance of aerodrome pavements. This was initially gained with the Australian Government Department that had engineering responsibility for Australia’s civil and defence aerodromes and then from 1989 with the Federal Airports Corporation as Chief Pavements Engineer until the privatization of government airports in 1998.  Duties for FAC involved design, construction, maintenance, condition assessment, valuation and load rating of runways, taxiways and aprons at the Corporation’s 22 airports throughout Australia, which included eight International Airports.  Since 1998 he has been a private consultant.

In addition to his work on Australia’s civil and defence airports he has been involved in overseas aircraft pavement projects at India’s Hyderabad and New Delhi airports, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Kuwait, Larnaka airport in Cyprus, Manila, Papua New Guinea and Wellington and Dunedin airports in New Zealand.

He represented Australia on the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) specialist pavement study group formed to consider the load rating (ACN) of new and future large aircraft. He was also a member of the planning committee for the US full-scale aircraft pavement test machine built to evaluate the loading effects of the Boeing 777, the Airbus A380 and other new large aircraft.

In 2009 he travelled to France and the US to make representations on behalf of the Australian Airports Association (AAA) to limit increases in tyre pressures in future aircraft that were proposed by Boeing and Airbus.

He was involved in the development of the aircraft pavement design computer program, APSDS, now widely used for the structural design of flexible aircraft pavements.

He has presented training courses on aircraft pavement design and construction to Australian Airports, to Airport Consulting organizations and to the Australian Department of Defence.  
In 2013 he received the Australian Airports Association’s Chairman’s award for Outstanding Service to the Airport Industry.

He is currently a technical advisor/reviewer for the design of major runway developments at Brisbane and Melbourne airports.
